Rescuers recover body of Indonesian hiker after Mount Dukono eruption

Rescuers in Indonesia have recovered the body of an Indonesian hiker who was caught in the eruption of Mount Dukono on Friday, May 8, 2026. The victim, identified as a local woman named Enjel, was found near the volcano's crater in North Halmahera, North Maluku province. The search for two missing Singaporean hikers continues, though their locations have been identified. Rescue efforts are hampered by ongoing eruptions, heavy rain, and hazardous volcanic debris. Authorities believe the hikers were inside a restricted 4-kilometer radius of the crater at the time of the eruption, defying safety warnings. The volcano, one of Indonesia's most active, has been erupting continuously since 1933. A group of 20 hikers, including seven Singaporeans and 10 Indonesians, were on the slopes when the eruption occurred. Seventeen were evacuated, some with minor injuries. The Indonesian government has warned against climbing the volcano due to its high alert status, but without an official ban, many climbers still attempt the trek. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is assisting affected Singaporeans.
